An #XLEgirl is a
total boss girl
. Girls who are hustlers, that work, chase their dreams, think outside the box. Introducing Claudia Sulewski as our next featured #XLEgirl.
Chapter two is all about Los Angeles, how long have you lived in LA?
I moved out to Los Angeles summer of 2014! Damn does time fly by fast..
Why did you move here from Chicago?
Growing up, I always had a feeling I'd end up in California. Given my interest in the entertainment industry and building an online career at such an early age, my dreams of moving out to Los Angeles seamlessly became my reality. I had built my team and strongest friendships out here, helping turn this town into my new home :) I arrived with an open attitude, curious and hungry for any opportunity I could get my hands on.
What is it about LA that you love now? Or is it the opposite?
I travel quite a bit, so I don't ever get too tired of this city. I actually start to crave routine and consistency! My favorite part's gotta be the people I meet out here.. Of course, every major city will bring in people with lesser intentions but mannn have I met some of the smartest, most creative individuals out here. The food's pretty wonderful as well.
We think you’re a total boss babe, what are the everyday tips that keep you on track to accomplishing your wildest dreams?
WRITE LISTS. Goals, ideas, to do's. Write it down and tackle things one by one. It's so easy to feel overwhelmed with bigger goals you'd love reach. Start small, take it day by day and ENJOY the process.
What do you consider your biggest accomplishment since you’ve moved to LA?
I have yet to look at one specific milestone or project that makes me feel the proudest, but I've got a feeling I never will. Every challenge and job sets you up for the next one- and the next. I hold pride to my interest in always craving a challenge and making myself uncomfortable. I never want to stop learning and growing.
Has LA changed you? How?
I've definitely never consumed so many vegetables, supplements and oat milk lattes in my LIFE, but LA has definitely shaped how I look at myself both as a person and as a business. How you carry yourself and communicate with others makes the BIGGEST difference. Always be respectful, know you're worth, speak your mind and always remember peoples' names.
What are your goals for the next five years?
Oooof I don't even know what I'm doing next month. Oh the wonders of acting! I hope to continue my transition into traditional media while maintaining the connection I have with my audience. As long as I'm creating things that make people feel something, I'm happy.
How do you set yourself apart from other people in your field?
When having so much control with the creative freedom/image of your career, maintaining individuality is SO important. Everyone always says it but "why be the second best version of someone else when you can just be the best version of yourself" Figure out what makes you different (usually the interests and quirks we grow up trying to hide) and lead with THOSE.. See where that lands you.
How do you balance everything in your life at such a young age while maintaining success?
Balance is EVERYTHING. I truly think it's an impossible thing to always maintain, but letting yourself stay aware is crucial. When you need to pull back, kick yourself in the butt, take a break, socialize, grind, etc. Everyone needs different amounts of everything to optimize their productivity and happiness. Take notice of your habits and how you feel and adjust accordingly to suit your needs.
What advice do you have to someone who wants to pick up and move to LA?
Save up and have a plan. This really goes for any location but city living can get super chaotic and expensive! Prepare to work hard because if you don't, someone else will.
How would you describe your style?
Ooof now THAT'S a loaded question. My style is constantly changing with trends, seasons, moods I'm in. Right now I'd describe it as comfortable, edgy, relaxed fits, and pops of color! Like I said, all over the place.
Your day to day is constantly changing? How do you decide what to wear?!
On an average day, I'm always choosing comfort over everything else. I'll typically be wearing blue jeans, an oversized t-shirt, and some platform sneakers. Lots of rings and lots of necklaces.
What can we expect to see from Claudia next?!
On the content front, I'm always pushing towards more open and intimate conversations people might not have someone to talk to about. Giving myself permission to indulge in projects that bring me joy like painting, writing, telling stories, sharing my ideas, etc will always hold high with priority! Hold me to it :)

XLE GIRLS

LAUREN ELIZABETH

AN #XLEGIRL IS A
TOTAL BOSS GIRL.

28 SEP - 2018

An #XLEgirl is a total boss girl. Girls who are hustlers, that work hard, chase their dreams,
think outside the box.
Being an
XLE girl
isn’t just what I wanted to call girls who purchased clothing from us. I want it to embody a movement of woman everywhere who are changing the game and living their
lives to the fullest.
Therefore, I wanted to use this line to also show light on those women whether it’s the ones we interview to
highlight their success and stories
or the girls who want to be apart of the movement. I hope these interviews can show everyone how many
inspiring women
there are out there today making an incredible life for themselves.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT CREATING
YOUR OWN CLOTHING LINE?
It’s truly a dream come true. I’ve spent my whole life walking around malls trying to find the perfect pieces I’m visioning in my head. And it is seriously a nightmare sometimes! “Ugh if this just had a different fit, a different crop, a different button!” It may have turned me into a shopoholic trying to make things work and then never wearing them BUT it has made me be able to be the best at designing these clothes because I have so much first hand experience with clothing. Getting to wear my own clothes and not worry about how I feel because I know they feel perfect is just the best.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN
ENTERPRENEUR? WAS THIS ALWAYS
WHAT YOU WANTED?
I don’t think I knew that I wanted it but it was 100% in my blood and what I was meant to do. To me, it means carving your own path and thinking outside the box. Instead of going and working for a clothing company for instance, I figured it out myself. It truly takes a hustler, you have to teach yourself almost everything and be okay with making mistakes and figuring stuff out with no traditional system, but it’s the dream for someone like me. There’s no for sure when you’re an entrepreneur so you have to take risks and have thick skin.
DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN FASHION WAS
SOMETHING YOU BECAME PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Ever since I was super young fashion was an obsession. My mom was always wearing the coolest outfits and taking me shopping. I blame her for my designer addiction! I remember being too afraid to wear so many styles because they were considered “high fashion” not really what girls in the midwest were wearing. But I always figured out how to make my style my own and still feel comfortable. I love looking at outfits and styles even if I don’t buy anything. Going to the mall was a hobby for me once I got my drivers license. It’s my passion, it’s an obsession, it’s everything! Always has been.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE PEOPLE WHO
WANT TO CREATE A BUSINESS OR DO
SOMETHING THEY ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT
BUT THEY DONT'T KNOW WHERE TO START?
You have to know you’re never stuck. In high school everyone says pick your college, pick your major and that’s it! You can change you can try things you can learn new things! It’s all about taking risks, surrounding yourself with people that you can learn from and work your ass off. But honestly, just go for it.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST SURPRISE
OF CREATING THE LINE?
How HARD it is! I mean listen, I never thought it was going to be EASY but still what a crazy learning experience this has been. I don’t think people realize that nothing happens without me touching it. Literally not a single thing doesn’t get approved by me. The physical sampling process was the hardest to get everything to align exactly with the vision in my head. This whole brand took a lot of work and I have an amazing team that’s made it all come true with me. Aka put up with me.
DESCRIBE THE FEELING YOU HAD
WHEN EVERYTHING WAS COMPLETE?
The clothing is done far in advance, so when everything was done getting samples with actual XLE tags after working on the pieces for months was the most exciting thing ever. I mean, who thought you could get so excited about tags but holy sh*t! Coolest thing ever! Then, when we shot the first campaign I finally felt complete. It felt so real and so good and so ME! I finally felt, “this has all been worth it!!! People are actually going to see this!!” I just feel on cloud 9 every day that I have this brand and that I get to keep working on new collections and new ideas.
DESCRIBE THE DAY OF LAUNCH
AND HOW YOU FELT?
I felt ON TOP OF THE WORLD!! The feedback online was everything to me. EVERYONE was so happy with the look, the prices, the styles! Things were selling out so fast! I went live THREE times that day because I couldn’t stop interacting with my audience and discussing the collection. I can’t wait for the next one I could do it every day if it was possible to make clothing drops that fast lol.
HOW DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL
WHEN THEY WEAR YOUR CLOTHES?
I want them to feel comfortable and confident. My BFF and I always say, “If you feel good, you look good, and you have fun, AND if you have fun, you look good, and you feel good!” It’s basically our mantra to get our confidence up and have the best day. These clothes are meant to be something you know you can put on and feel your best and get shit done! Aka be a boss XLEgirl.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE
PHOTO SHOOT? EXPLAIN BEING THE CREATIVE
DIRECTOR ON FLY
I loved directing. I learned so much but also my touch was so important. There were so many things that would’ve been different if I didn’t step in. So I felt like I found something that I was good at in a space where I was valuable which is all we can ask for with our work lives. As much as I love being in front of the camera, I love hustling behind the scenes and being in charge.
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO NAME
THE PIECES AFTER PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE?
I remember when we had the conversation of what we wanted to name the pieces and I was just thought of course they’re going to be names of people! Not just Style 37193 Dress! I picked every pieces name based on someone in my life and why it reminded me of them. I got giddy knowing I would be able to show everyone their pieces eventually! I am very quiet with my work so I didn’t tell anyone for a while and it was so rewarding getting all the positive feedback from them and my audience. Everything is in the small details for me so having people like that is really cool.
AS YOU KNOW ALL YOU FAMILY, FRIENDS,
AND FANS ARE PROUD OF YOU, BUT WHY
ARE YOU TRULY PROUD OF YOURSELF?
Of course Mere would ask this! Ugh! Everyone knows I don’t do big compliments and ask for praise I just am onto the next thing! There aren’t many times in my career so far where I’ve been all, “Woo! I did it! I’m awesome!” But this was 100% one of them because it took so long and took so much hard work. So seeing how genuinely excited everyone was about XLE made me feel just WOW, I did it! Did I really do this?! Holy SHIT! Thank God!! I am very proud of myself for pulling this off I kind of can’t believe it. I’m so grateful though because I want to do it for the rest of my life.
